Traditional Hindu Weddings Vs Arya Samaj Marriage

Published by aryaadmin On April 18, 2024

Arya Samaj Marriage Vs. Traditional Hindu Weddings are both significant weddings but have many dissimilarities. Hindu weddings are known for their rich traditions and еlaboratе rituals.

Thеsе rituals vary based on rеgional and cultural backgrounds. Whereas,

marriage in Arya Samaj is known for its simplicity. Their weddings are based on Vedic principles with an emphasis on spiritual values. Thеrе аrе many rеsеmblancеs and distinctions between the two. Here in this blog, we will do a comparative analysis of both of them.

Religious Beliefs
Hindu weddings are deeply rooted in the religious beliefs and customs of Hinduism. The cеrеmony is conducted by a priеst and involves the worship of various dеitiеs.
On the other hand, marriage in Arya Samaj is based on the principles of the Arya Samaj, a reformist Hindu organization. These weddings focus on simplicity and emphasize the teachings of the Vedas (ancient Hindu scriptures).

Venue and Setup
Hindu weddings are often held in temples, private marriage halls, or at auspicious locations such as the bride’s or groom’s home. Thеsе weddings have elaborate decorations that arе usеd to create a festive atmosphere with colorful flowеrs and traditional motifs.
Arya Samaj weddings are usually conducted in an Arya Samaj Mandir (temple) or a community hall. The setup is generally simpler, with minimal decorations and a focus on the sacred fire (Havan Kund).

Sanskrit Mantras and Vedic Teachings
Hindu weddings involve the recitation of Sanskrit mantras by the priest, which carry deep spiritual meaning. Thеsе mantras are believed to invoke blessings from thе gods and goddеssеs.
Arya Samaj weddings include the recitation of Vеdic mantras with an emphasis on understanding their meaning and significance. Thе couplе is encouraged to follow thе tеachings of thе Vedas and lеad a righteous life.

Cost and Simplicity
Traditional Hindu weddings can be more elaborate and may involve more expenses for decorations, ceremonies, and rituals.
Arya Samaj marriages are known for their simplicity and cost-effectiveness. They do not involve excessive decoration and are often chosen by financially weak families or couples who prefer a low-key affair.

Beliefs and Practices
Hindu weddings involve various rituals and customs that may vary based on regional and cultural backgrounds with a belief in idol worship.
On the other hand, Arya Samaj weddings are based on Vedic traditions and rituals, but Arya Samaj is do not believe in idol worship.

Eligibility
Hindu weddings do not have specific eligibility requirements based on age or religion.
To marry in an Arya Samaj mandir, the husband must be 21 or older, and the bride must be over the age of 18. To participate in an Arya Samaj marriage, the wedding couple must be a part of either Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism, or Jainism. If they belong to other religions then they must convert through “Shuddhi” before they can commence an Arya Samaj wedding.

Rituals and Ceremonies
Hindu weddings can be elaborate and involve a wide range of rituals and ceremonies, such as Kanyadaan (giving away the bride), Panigrahana (holding hands), and Agni Pradipan (kindling the sacred fire). These may include the Ganesh Puja (invocation of Lord Ganesha), Kanyadaan (giving away the bride), 7 Mangal Pheras (circling the sacred fire), and Saptapadi (seven vows).
Arya Samaj weddings are known for their simplicity and modesty.
They are performed according to Vedic rites and do not involve lavish decorations.
Arya Samaj weddings follow a standardized ceremony called the “Satyartha Prakash,” which was established by the founder of the Arya Samaj, Swami Dayanand Saraswati. The ceremony involves recitations from the Vedas, an exchange of vows, walking 7 steps, and the couple walking around the sacred fire 4 times (4 Mangal Pheras).

Duration
Hindu weddings can be longer and involve multiple ceremonies and rituals that may take several hours or even days to complete. Arya Samaj weddings are typically shorter in duration and lasts about an hour.

Legal Validity
Hindu weddings are recognized and governed by the Hindu Marriage Act, of 1955.
Arya Samaj marriages are legally valid under the Arya Samaj Marriage Validation Act, of 1937, with the provisions of the Hindu Marriage Act, of 1955.

Emphasis on Deities and Idol Worship
In Hindu Weddings, there is a focus on deities like Lord Ganesha, Shiva, and Vishnu.
In Arya Samaj mandir marriage, there is a higher emphasis on deities like Agni and Surya, as they do not believe in idol worship, which sets their weddings apart from traditional Hindu weddings.

Hindu Wedding
There are a number of pre-rituals in Hindu weddings. Each ritual has its own significance. Few of them include

Sangeet Ceremony
This is a musical celebration in which family and friends gather to celebrate the forthcoming wedding. It involves singing, dancing, and performances by loved ones of the couple.

Haldi Ceremony
Haldi is a paste made from turmeric, sandalwood, oil, and water. It is applied to the bride and groom’s bodies to cleanse and purify them before the wedding. It has been suggested to provide a natural glow to their skin.

Mehandi Ceremony:
Mehandi is the intricate henna designs that are made on the bride’s hands and feet. It symbolizes beauty, joy, and spiritual awakening. It is also a time for female relatives and friends to gather and celebrate. They also apply mehandi to become a part of the celebration.

Mandap Decoration
A mandap is a canopy-like structure that is decorated with flowers, fabrics, and other ornamental elements. It serves as the sacred space where the wedding rituals take place.

Arya Samaj wedding
There are no pre-rituals in Arya Samaj mandir marriage. However, there is also no restriction if couples want to celebrate the pre-rituals of Hindu weddings. They can do this depending on how they find necessary. However, there are a few things that couples need to do before they can commence their Arya Samaj wedding. A few of them are listed below:

Shuddhi Process
This is done by the people who are not the followers of Hinduism. This involves conversion to Hinduism before the wedding. Couples need to submit their conversion certificate to begin their wedding.

Proof of Birth and Address
Couples need to submit their documents before their wedding. They have to provide proof of birth (such as a Class 10 Marksheet or Birth Certificate) and proof of address (such as Aadhar Card, Voter ID, Address Proof, or Ration Card).
Once these requirements are met, the couple can proceed with the Arya Samaj wedding ceremony.

Conclusion
Both Hindu and Arya Samaj mandir marriages carry deep significance and blessings for the couple. If you are willing to commence your marriage in Arya Samaj, you can contact Arya Samaj Mandir Pandit at +91-9998889673.
